I received an e-mail from a friend yesterday with the above photo attached. There are so many things wrong with this it boggles the mind.
4 USC § 7 - Position and manner of display
(i)
When displayed either horizontally or
vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the
flag’s own right, that is, to the observer’s left....
4 USC § 8 - Respect for flag
(b)
The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
(d)
The flag should never be used as... drapery....
(e)
The flag should never be fastened,
displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily
torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.
(i)
The flag should never be used for
advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever....
(k)
The flag, when it is in such condition that
it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a
dignified way, preferably by burning.
In his e-mail to me he told me he'd spoken to employees of the store twice and he'd been told the owner is aware of his concerns and would address them. One of the women in the store told him yes she'd heard it makes him "sad". Sad can you believe it?! It has been a couple of weeks since he was told the owner would fix the flag's position (nothing was mentioned regarding the stains and the tear). Nothing has been done.
I think it's a disgrace. They can't plead ignorance-they've been told there is a problem and the Flag Code is real easy to find on-line:
How can you respect your Country if you can't respect its Flag? If this sort of disrespect bothers you call them on it. If you see other examples of this sort of behavior call attention to it! I firmly believe in one's right to burn our flag in protest but I also believe one should show it the utmost respect in all other circumstances. Our symbols are important.
These two sites call attention to flag issues. I'm sure if I spent more time looking I could find lots more.
The business this particular shameful display belongs to is:
